A dental crown is a porcelain cap that looks just like a real tooth. It covers an existing chipped or cracked tooth, right down to the gum line. Same day crowns require specialized training and equipment in order to provide them. Dentists of Hinsdale Lake has that equipment and experience, and we’re very happy to be able to offer same day crowns to our patients in Willowbrook, IL.
Same Day vs. Traditional Crowns
A traditional crown requires two visits to the dentist’s office. On the first visit, an impression of the affected tooth is made. The dentist may have to file the tooth down to prepare it to receive a crown. The tooth impression is sent to a dental lab where the crown is created in a process that takes two to three weeks. You might be fitted with a temporary filling while you wait for the crown to be produced and sent back to your dentist. The crown is then installed on a second trip to the dentist.
With a “same day crown,” the name says it all. Your new crown will be installed on the same day of your initial appointment.
Same Day Crown Procedure
The dentist will use a tiny 3D camera to take pictures of the damaged or cracked tooth. Those pictures are then scanned into a computer, and the dental team goes to work in-house creating your new crown. We use computer aided design (CAD) and computer-aided manufacturing (CAM) using a specialized porcelain mill to do the job. You can relax in the waiting room while this process takes place.
The entire process happens in one office visit. Your dentist will install the crown and thanks to the specialized equipment, it will be a perfect fit. No dental putty is required and you won’t need to have a temporary filling installed and later removed.
Not every patient is eligible for same day crowns. In certain situations, a different procedure may be a better option for you. The best way to find out for sure is to schedule an appointment for an exam.
If you have a chipped or cracked tooth and want to find out whether same day crowns are right for you, contact Dentists of Hinsdale Lake to set up an appointment.
